The Radio Lifetime of Supernova Remnants and the Distribution of Pulsar Velocities at Birth

چکیده
We have made VLA images of the elds around three young pulsars which have resulted in the discovery of two new supernova remnants and connrmation of a third. We argue that, in at least two cases and perhaps the third, the pulsars are physically associated with these supernova remnants. A review of all known young pulsars shows that the majority are associated with supernova remnants. We show that the typical density of the interstellar medium into which the supernova remnants are evolving has a density of 0.2 cm 3 instead of the low value of 0.01 cm 3 which had been calculated from other studies, and results in a considerably longer radio lifetime for supernova remnants. Both the morphology of the supernova remnants and the location of the pulsars imply that most of these young pulsars are born with large transverse velocities (500 km s 1). This high velocity mean in the distribution of pulsar velocities appears to be a general property of the pulsar population at birth, not seen in proper motion studies, due to selection eeects. We explore the implications of this result as it relates to the origin of these velocities and the galactic distribution of pulsars. High velocity pulsars can escape their supernova remnant in a very short timescale, comparable to the lifetime of the remnant and may even play a role in extending the observable radio lifetime of the remnant. A signiicant fraction will be capable of escaping the disk of the Galaxy, producing an extended halo population.

Energetic Young Radio Pulsars
Young radio pulsars shed vast amounts of rotational energy, sometimes as high as 100,000 times the total energy loss rate from the sun. The wide range of phenomena resulting from this energy loss include: glitches, timing noise, jets, bow shocks, bullets and plerions and are be reviewed from an observational perspective. Past and proposed surveys for young radio pulsars are summarised along wit...
متن کاملThe Velocity Distribution of Isolated Radio Pulsars
We infer the velocity distribution of radio pulsars based on large-scale 0.4 GHz pulsar surveys. We do so by modelling evolution of the locations, velocities, spins, and radio luminosities of pulsars; calculating pulsed flux according to a beaming model and random orientation angles of spin and beam; applying selection effects of pulsar surveys; and comparing model distributions of measurable p...
متن کاملSeparated before birth: pulsars B2020+28 and B2021+51 as the remnants of runaway stars
Astrometric data on the pulsars B2020+28 and B2021+51 suggest that they originated within several parsecs of each other in the direction of the Cyg OB2 association. It was proposed that the pulsars share their origin in a common massive binary and were separated at the birth of the second pulsar following the asymmetric supernova explosion. We consider a different scenario for the origin of the...

I review several topics in the structure of supernova remnants. Hydrodynamic instabilities in young remnants may give rise to the cellular structure that is sometimes observed, although structure in the ejecta might also play a role. The presence of ejecta close to the forward shock front of a young remnant can be the result of ejecta clumps or the dynamical effects of cosmic rays. Slower movin...

The possible association of the supernova remnant (SNR) G 343.1−2.3 with the pulsar PSR B 1706−44 (superposed on the arclike " shell " of the SNR) has been questioned by some authors on the basis of an inconsistency between the implied and measured (scintillation) transverse velocities of the pulsar, the absence of any apparent interaction between the pulsar and the SNR's " shell " , and some o...
